West Brom steal a point at Anfield

Liverpool took an early lead when Sadio Mane finished clinically from a Joel Matip pass (12) but they struggled to create clear chances after that and Sam Allardyce’s side punished their sluggish display with a deserved leveller eight minutes from time. Matheus Pereira was the provider, his cross from the right finding Ajayi, whose towering header crept over the line after bouncing off the inside of the post.

The draw means Liverpool missed the chance to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League table, and leaves Allardyce, the last manager to win a Premier League game at Anfield, with Crystal Palace in 2017, to celebrate another impressive result on Merseyside.

LIVERPOOL 1-1 WEST BROM

Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp:

“To have two shots on target with all that possession? Not good enough.

“Liverpool didn’t do enough to win the game. That was a really poor performance.”18:35

“Once you go slack, you get what you deserved. They got what they deserved, we got what we deserved. We all went slack.

“West Brom came here with a game plan and they were happy with 1-0 at half-time, and you know when you come up against a Sam Allardyce team they want to stay in it for as long as they can and take the one chance they get and they did that.

“First half was good, we dominated the ball, stopped counter attacks, counter-pressing well, created a lot of chances and the second half it was like we didn’t want to do it again. We tried different things and it just wasn’t working. We all went slack. Every one of us made a mistake in the second half, which can’t happen.”18:35

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone:

“It is difficult to come to places like this. We dug in deep, we ran for 94 minutes, it was tough at times, but we got an equaliser and it is a great point away from home. It feels more like a win.

“We knew they would always have a lot of the ball. We didn’t really get going in the first half, second half we ran a bit more. The boss just said to keep going as we were still in the game.

“Everyone knows what the manager is like. He has come in and things change very quickly, and the lads are reacting to it. It is new management; new things and we keep going and believe in ourselves.”

And on his save to deny Roberto Firmino late on: “It was a great save, to be honest I didn’t have that much to do in the game. It was close but thankfully I tipped it round the post.”
